Verkkouutiset online news site reports that the Greens of Finland believe that even if just one new nuclear power plant licence is given this means nuclear power is built for exporting energy. According to the Greens, from this it follows that nuclear waste is “imported” to Finland.
The Greens suggest that the government must stick to its climate and energy strategy in which it is stated that no nuclear power for continuous exports will be built in Finland. The Greens also think that if the government follows the guidelines of the strategy and focuses on energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy and at the same time takes into account the considerable decrease in electricity consumption, no new nuclear power is needed.
Chairman of the Greens’ nuclear power working group Timo Juurikkala says that Olkiluoto 3 power plant that is being now constructed will compensate for the present imports so if new nuclear power plants will be constructed most of their production will be exported. This is the reason why the party thinks new licences should not be given. The Greens point out that the new nuclear plant issue is not urgent and therefore decisions can be left for next governments.
