Support for the Hanhikivi 1 project by residents in Pyhäjoki and the surrounding municipalities remains steady. This is revealed in the survey conducted by the market research company Norstat Finland Oy, which publishes its results annually.
Of the Pyhäjoki residents, 72.7 percent (75.0%) support the construction of the power plant on the Hanhikivi peninsula. Of the residents of the local municipalities of Pyhäjoki, Kalajoki, Merijärvi, Oulainen, and Raahe, 67.2 percent (71.9%) have a positive view of the project.
The number of people with a favorable view of the project has dipped slightly compared to the figures a year ago; correspondingly, the number of people with an unfavorable view and the number of people who are undecided has increased slightly.
- We are pleased with the strong support for our work in the region, says Regional Communications Manager Heli Haikola.
According to Haikola, this year has differed from the previous one in many ways: the preparatory work at the work site is waiting for advancement in the construction license documentation, so there have been fewer new contracts for local entrepreneurs than before. Likewise, the migration of Fennovoima employees to the area has not yet increased its momentum.
- A significant thing happening next year will be the construction of the administration building. Eventually, almost all our Fennovoima employees will work in the administration building. Over the upcoming years, the company’s employees will gradually transition to working in Pyhäjoki, says Haikola.
During October and November, Norstat conducted a phone survey of 400 randomly selected Pyhäjoki residents and 450 residents in Kalajoki, Merijärvi, Oulainen and Raahe. The margin of error is a maximum of ± 3.3 percent. Fennovoima has commissioned Norstat Finland to conduct opinion surveys in the region of the nuclear power plant since 2008.
