Uranium occurs in small concentrations nearly everywhere.
Thanks to its high energy content, it will be possible to harvest it profitably even from seawater in the future. The currently know uranium deposits will last for approximately 80 years with the current reactor equipment, and with breeder reactors, today’s “waste” – spent fuel, depleted uranium, thorium – can provide electric power for the world for centuries. Mining uranium does not cause any more environmental damage than mining operations in general. In addition, even today, nearly half of the uranium is produced by extracting it directly from the ground, without any significant mining operations.
