Fennovoima and Posiva signed a Service Agreement – Environmental Impact Assessment begins
Fennovoima and Posiva’s subsidiary Posiva Solutions Ltd have signed a service agreement. The agreement will enable Posiva's expertise to be utilized in Fennovoima’s final disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
Furthermore, Fennovoima has submitted its Environmental Impact Assessment program (EIA) to the Ministry of Employment and the Economy (MEE) today, fulfilling the requirement of the 2010 Decision-in-Principle. Geological studies will be initiated together with Posiva Solutions at Pyhäjoki and Eurajoki in order to determine the suitability of these selected locations.
Fennovoima’s final disposal project will span over decades: the location will be selected in the 2040’s and the final disposal of Fennovoima’s spent nuclear fuel will begin at the earliest in the 2090’s.
”We consider collaboration the best alternative in nuclear waste management. Our goal is to achieve long term cooperation with Posiva and the parties liable for nuclear waste management (TVO and Fortum),” states Fennovoima’s CEO Toni Hemminki.
In accordance with the Decision-in-Principle granted to Fennovoima in 2010, Fennovoima was to submit to MEE either a final disposal cooperation agreement made with TVO and Fortum, or an Environmental Impact Assessment program for its own final disposal facility by the end of June 2016.
